| Cystic Fibrosis or CF is the #1 life shortening
genetic illness of children and young adults. Ten million Americans are
symptomless carriers of the defective gene that causes CF (that's 1 in
30 people) There are over 30,000 children and young adults affected by
this terrible disease, many in our own community. Cystic Fibrosis
affects both the lung and digestive system. It produces a thick sticky
mucus in the airways that cause life threatening bacterial infections
and chronic lung damage. It also blocks the passage of enzymes from the
pancreas to the stomach resulting in malnutrition. While much progress
has been made toward a cure, and there continues to be new treatments to
give these kids a better quality of life, it is a tragic fact that we
still continue to lose precious lives to this terrible disease. |
